Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the correction of improperly positioned jaws and teeth.
Teeth that are not correctly aligned will be more difficult to clean resulting in tooth decay and periodontal disease. Crooked teeth and mis-aligned jaws can also cause stress on chewing muscles that can lead to headaches, TMJ and neck, shoulder, and back pain. More here on this website
The benefits of orthodontic treatment include a healthier mouth, a more pleasing appearance, and laster longing teeth.
Foods to Avoid With Braces
Food that is either hard or sticky should be avoided since they may cause the braces to come off of the teeth. Other foods such as raw vegetables and apples need to cut into bite size pieced to avoid damage to the braces. Harmful habits to include biting on pens and chewing ice are to be avoided as well.

Soreness Caused by Braces and Other Appliances
When your braces are first put on, or an adjustment has been made you may notice your teeth and jaws feeling sore. This is a normal part of the process since braces are meant to slowly move teeth into place. To relieve this pain we recommend swishing your mouth with lukewarm salt water, or for more severe pain taking the recommended amount of pain reliever.
It is not uncommon to feel irritation on your lips, cheeks and tongue from the braces. This will usually go away after two weeks as you become used to the braces. Using wax on the braces is a good solution to relieve the pain. This wax will be provided and if you need more just ask. More information
